The Karate Difference |
|
By Peter L. Albertson
Karate! What does it mean? In general terms it means “empty hand.” This meaning goes even deeper for some kyus. I did not know what karate meant when I started. All I knew was that it dealt with self-defense, the Bo, the Sai and the Nunchaku. Now, after months of training the meaning of karate for me means discipline, determination and pride. I got my start with karate in October of 1999 with my current sensei, Sensei Baier. When I started training, I was unsure what to expect from my fellow karatekas. I was surprised by the kindness that I received from everyone, especially Steve. As the months past, I have seen kyus of young and old learn new things, share ideas, and learning techniques. When I sparred fellow karatekas, I knew I had weak areas, open spots where opponents could hit me. With the help of two fellow karatekas, Steve and Jim, I am improving on these weak areas, but am still vulnerable to some hits. I believe that no one can achieve perfection. There is always room for improvement. The kyu that I have the most respect for is Jim. Besides helping me improve my fighting skills, he continually encourages me to do better than I think I can. Karate instills discipline in people. I know that I began my training in Karate because I lacked discipline. Since I started practicing, I see improvement in myself, not only in discipline, but also in my overall health. My experience with Sensei Baier, the other Senseis in our dojo, and my fellow karatekas will always remain with me. To be in GoJu means to be GoJu itself. Live your dreams; don’t dream your life. |
