How to Tie the Obi:
While the karateka takes pride in maintaining a clean, neat gi (uniform), the obi (belt) is not washed. After a period of training, the obi darkens and frays as a result of hard work. This outward sign, in essence, becomes and outward symbol of the efforts of the karateka. |

Start with belt in the center of your body; stripes to your right. |
|
Wrap belt around and cross belt behind back. |
|
Take the belt in your left and cross over right (left over right). |
|
Take belt in right hand and lay it over the left (right over left). |
|
Continue pushing it up through the circle. |
|
Snug up the knot. |
|
Snug up the knot. |
|
Continue by brining it up under the entire belt. |
|
When finished, stripes are on the left. |
