How to Tie the Obi:

While the karateka takes pride in maintaining a clean, neat gi (uniform), the obi (belt) is not washed. After a period of training, the obi darkens and frays as a result of hard work.  This outward sign, in essence, becomes and outward symbol of the efforts of the karateka.

Start with belt in the center of your body; stripes to your right.

Wrap belt around and cross belt behind back.

Take the belt in your left and cross over right (left over right).

Take belt in right hand and lay it over the left (right over left).

Continue pushing it up through the circle.

Snug up the knot.

Snug up the knot.

Continue by brining it up under the entire belt.

When finished, stripes are on the left.
